The Unspoken Journey of Teachers

Delhi - Central | October 12, 2015

Something unusual … teachers discussing not their students but themselves

Teachers are most silent leaders. They are are the second best thing that happens to children; first is obviously Mothers.

While budding talents are obviously the most discussed ones, teachers and their contributions are generally not all that heard about. Talk of student life, and there’s a list of cherished memories, most-loved teachers, the encouraging pat that came from teachers, those punishments that were fun, assemblies and what not! But a teacher’s life? Do we hear about them? Yeah, there are some big-shot names whose ideals many of the teachers till date follow, but how about those daily-life teachers whom we hardly get to hear and talk about.

So, here’s one initiative dedicated to the many unheard-of teachers, which tries to bring forth the achievements, the love and fights of a teachers, the struggles of a teacher, the loving memories of a teacher.

Recently, Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has started a campaign on Facebook, exhibiting the stories of teachers of Dubai. Some teachers have had a long journey down this lane and others simply have lengthy list of their cherished moments as a teacher.

The very first post was of a young charming woman who described how she connects with her students.

“I believe that you need to get into a child's heart before you can get into their heads. I bring my oud into class and I play it and sing old songs by Fairuz to the children. I like to make it fun for the kids as it gets them motivated and excited. They all like the music and sing along, and it helps me teach them Arabic pronunciation. Once I get into their hearts they grow to love me and they try their best at school"?, she said.

This campaign was launched on 5th October, World Teachers’ Day. Every day a different story is posted, where various teachers from Dubai share there teaching experience, their journey and why they chose this profession in the first place.

Dr Abdulla Al Karam, KDHA Director General very fondly shares his thought behind this campaign saying, "Every teacher has the power to change the world. We entrust teachers with the future of our children, and our city, and we are humbled by the love they show towards their work and their students, Teachers of Dubai is one way we as a community can show our appreciation to the teachers who enrich our children's lives and give them the skills to be happier."

However, the emotion and thought related to every post is common, the care and love for their students, but the journey linked to every Teacher is unique in itself.

And we already have a favorite story, ?“It’s my birthday, and I’ve asked all the children in my class not to bring their lunch boxes, because I am going to treat them", a beautiful educator said. As a child we always used to distribute candies and chocolates on our birthday, but rarely received one when it was our Teacher’s birthday; finally someone is getting the chance.

Now, maybe I’d like to switch my profession.
